dagli atelier d’architecture’s color gradients are a result of long-term research. We examined several architectural styles - Schinkel and classicism/neo-classicism in particular. We found out that from gothic on, many styles used different layers in the façade design. One can quickly understand the effect looking at the porch of gothic cathedrals. We developed these articulations further by analyzing and abstraction of the different styles. This research finally resulted in our color gradients, which are used in a unique manner. At each time, we vary the accentuation of elements; we might underline façade openings as well as edges or outlines. Also, we use the gradients in different layers, giving the previous described depth effects at specific areas of the façade. The conceptual articulation of the hereby shown facades is done by using these color gradients. They produce a subtle shadow play between the different parts of the buildings. They also generate depth effects between the volumes and openings in the façade. The subtle underlining of edges is consequently used designing the facades as well as the terraces. The gradients help to visually reduce the gauge of the terraces and create a soft, imperceptible transition between the architectural and landscaping elements.

JEUX D’OMBRES

is a luxurious villa in the tradition of the international style. The customer wanted clear forms, unambiguous sharp edged volumes as well as an axial symmetry. The design reacts with a quite massive monolithic volume towards the street that gets sensitively articulated into different formal parts towards the gardens. This conceptual articulation is done as described earlier by the color gradients underlining specific edges of the building.

INTERIORS

The interior of the villa is designed as succession of open rooms. The different zones remain clearly distinguishable due to the arrangement of the different functions and the accentual positioning of furniture. The axial symmetric arrangement of the different zones as well as the huge glass fronts towards the gardens help to underline the impression of spacious open rooms. A narrow, long swimming pool situated just behind one of the main openings towards the garden seems to extend the interiors at the exterior of the building and vice versa. The landscaping picks up that subtle play between different zones elements using the conceptual gradual transitions. The private areas of the family are situated on the upper level of the villa. Transparency and generosity are the main impressions due to the arrangement of the bedrooms and the circumjacent rooms as well as the arrangement towards the roof terraces. The different depths of the volume mold the villa and sensitively articulate the different zones and building parts.
